Marrakech & Beyond: Morocco's Most Extraordinary Riads and Desert Camps

April 2026·7 min read

From candlelit rooftop dinners in the medina to sleeping under a billion stars in the Sahara

Morocco is a country of extraordinary contrasts — ancient and modern, austere and opulent, overwhelming and deeply peaceful. It is a place where a single day can take you from the sensory intensity of a medieval souk to the absolute silence of the Sahara, and where the quality of your experience depends almost entirely on who is guiding you through it.

The country rewards slow, intentional travel. Its greatest pleasures are not the obvious landmarks but the hidden ones: the riad courtyard where orange blossom scents the evening air, the hammam where centuries of ritual have been distilled into something close to ceremony, the desert camp where the stars are so dense they seem to have weight.

The Riad: Morocco's Greatest Luxury

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around a central courtyard — a form of architecture designed to turn its back on the chaos of the medina and create an interior world of calm and beauty. The finest riads in Marrakech have been restored with extraordinary care, their zellige tilework and carved plaster ceilings brought back to their original splendor and paired with contemporary comforts.

We work with a curated selection of riads that offer genuine privacy, exceptional service, and a sense of place that no international hotel can replicate. Many have rooftop terraces where dinner is served by candlelight, with the minarets of the medina rising around you and the call to prayer drifting across the rooftops.

"The medina of Marrakech is one of the great urban experiences on earth — but it requires a guide who knows its rhythms, its hidden doors, and its best-kept secrets."

Beyond Marrakech: The Atlas and the Desert

A complete Moroccan journey moves beyond Marrakech into the High Atlas Mountains, where Berber villages cling to terraced hillsides and the air is cool and clear. We arrange private drives through the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops at kasbahs and argan cooperatives, before descending into the Draa Valley and the edge of the Sahara.

The desert camps we recommend are a world away from the tourist operations that crowd the dunes near Merzouga. Our partners operate intimate, beautifully appointed camps — no more than a dozen tents — where the experience of the desert is genuine and the silence is absolute.

The Hammam Ritual

No visit to Morocco is complete without a proper hammam experience. We arrange private sessions at historic bathhouses in Fez and Marrakech, where the ritual of steam, black soap, and kessa scrub has been practiced for centuries. It is, in the most literal sense, a cleansing — and one of the most deeply relaxing experiences Morocco offers.
